#23 – The beginning!!!!

March 1, 2008 - Leave a Response

I’m very grateful that we have been able to do this at Alameda County; as I have been excited about it since I first heard about it quite some time ago.   It is excellent that everyone was given an opportunity to participate and receive a prize.

This has definitely been fun for me.  I’ve heard of and checked out many of these things before, but these exercises allowed me to revisit things and spend some more time doing so.   This has been a very positive step toward life long learning for me.

I think we should definitely do things like this again!!  There will always be new things to learn, so I could see us doing another one of these again in the future, as new web technologies come out.   I would also definitely participate.

And last but not least, I would like to thank Susan Fisher for making this happen at our Library!!  She did a fantastic job getting it organized, then an excellent job rolling it out at a staff meeting, getting it going, encouraging staff each week with her reminders, and managing the whole project from start to finish!!!.  Awesome job, Susan!!!!

 Thank you from Lori!

P.S. I realized that I hadn’t done exercises 5,6, and 7 as thoroughly as I should have, so I went back and did those again, that is why things are bit out of order.

#6 – More flickr

I visited flickr color pickr – that is a cool site.  There I also found another album maker which looks cool and I’ll be trying too.  I’m out to find the best one!  I also played with Mosaic Maker – very, very cool!!!  These things are all very useful.

#5 – flickr

I’ve used flickr before, but this exercise allowed me to do a bit more which was very fun.  I checked out the popular tags; interesting that “beach” is one of the most popular ones and also one of the tags I put on my picture of me in Maui that I uploaded to flikr – http://www.flickr.com/photos/maherpics/sets/72157604020892537.  I also checked the last 7 days – there are some beautiful photos there.  I also checked out the Alameda County Library photos – we’ve got some great ones there.  And last but not least, I explored a flickr service for creating a photoalbum which I’ll be experimening more with soon with some photos of our IT group.

#7 -Technology

Technology is wonderful.  Because of technology we are able to share photos as we have never been able to before.  I love that!

#22 – Audiobooks

February 29, 2008 - Leave a Response

The Overdrive Audiobooks are fantastic; and we are very fortunate to have these available on our site.  I’ve had to work quite a bit with these because it is something we set up while I’ve been here so had to do some testing at the beginning and then a few times after that too.  Today while getting in there to look around again at what is available, I found and downloaded a book on Spirituality that I’ll listen to.

#21 – Podcasts

Here a great technology podcast – http://www.twit.tv/twit that I try to listen to whenever possible.

#20 – YouTube

February 28, 2008 - Leave a Response

I’ve been using and checking out YouTube for awhile now.  YouTube and sites like this are fantastic!!!!  Libraries can post videos that they have done so that others can use them and learn from them.  I found a good PowerPoint extreme makeover video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC1OixM_118&feature=related that would be very good for anyone using powerpoint to watch.

#19 – Web 2.0 Tools

February 28, 2008 - 2 Responses

I checked out Zillow, a very cool real estate site.  I can see how this tool could be useful for libraries to offer to people interested in moving to thier areas.   I also think it be a great tool that could be added to the real estate information on a library website.

#18 – Web apps – Zolo – Uploaded Doc

February 27, 2008 - Leave a Response

Played around with Zolo – a word processor.  The Following is what I typed there and then published it in my blog (it didn’t transfer the emotion too well as you can see below):

As far as word processors go this one looks pretty good and easy to use.  I’ll try adding some emotions  cool.  Never quite sure about these for business, but love them for other things!
